For inquiring minds: During the 20th century, many artesian wells were sunk into the lagoon edges to draw water for local industry, Venice began to sink. The extraction of water from the aquifer was the cause. The sinking has slowed since artesian wells were banned in the 1960s. The city is still threatened by more frequent low-level floods—the Acqua alta*, that rise several centimetres over its quays—regularly following certain tides. Many old houses, and staircases are now flooded, rendering former ground floors uninhabitable.
May 2003, the inauguration of the MOSE Project (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), an experimental model for evaluating the performance of hollow floatable gates, expected to be completed late this year; to fix a series of 78 hollow pontoons to the sea bed across the 3 entrances to the lagoon. When tides are predicted to rise above 110 cm, the pontoons will be filled with air, to float on lagoon side while hinged at sea floor on seaside, blocking incoming water from the Adriatic Sea. |
Studies indicate that the city continues sinking at a relatively slow rate of 1–2 mm per annum; therefore, the state of alert has not been revoked.
* Acqua alta: an exceptional tide peak that occurs periodically in the northern Adriatic Sea. Applied to tides in the Italian region of Veneto. The peaks reach their maximum in the Venetian Lagoon, causing partial flooding of Venice and Chioggia. between autumn & spring, when the astronomical tides are reinforced by prevailing seasonal winds that hamper the usual reflux. The main winds are the sirocco, blowing northbound along the Adriatic Sea, and the bora, which has a specific local effect due to the shape & location of the Venetian Lagoon. |
