Costa Rica's National Symbol:  The Sloth

The two-fingered sloths and three-fingered sloths are declared national symbols of Costa Rica's fauna and the country's commitment to protecting forests. Sloths may be slow animals, but their leisurely ways seem quite suited to the pura vida in Costa Rica, and no doubt gave rise to their name in Spanish: oso perezoso, literally “lazy bear.”

Costa Rica's National Flower

The national flower of Costa Rica is called the purple country girl, or Guaria Morada in Spanish. It is a stunning orchid shining with purple hues and thin, rounded petals. Based on Tico tradition, the flower brings good luck and fortune.
