Only 52 minutes flying time from Miami, Grand Bahama Island generously offers all you expect from a tropical destination and much more. Grand Bahama Island is more than just the excitement of Freeport/Lucaya, more than just casinos, all-inclusive hotels and world-class entertainment. Outside the city is an entire island filled with natural wonders, and incredible diversity of marine life.   • Stroll endless miles of spectacular beaches, find your own secluded cove, dance the night away in cosmopolitan Freeport or escape civilization and explore one of the world's largest underwater cave systems.
  • The "discovery" of Grand Bahama was a result of Ponce de Leon's quest for the "Fountain of Youth" in 1513. Just a short vacation here will convince you that it has indeed been found.
  • It is believed that the Spanish explorer described the areas around the Little Bahama Bank as being "baja mar" (literally 'shallow sea'). From this, the name, Gran Bajamar, or 'Great Shallows,' evolved. Those shallows concealed for years the oldest archaeological artifacts of the Lucayan Indians, dating to the 12th century.
