Grenada
The Spice Island of Love
Called the Isle of Spice, a caribbean island you've always imagined...long white beaches, rainforest-clad mountains, days that end with fiery sunsets and air scented with the exotic aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and clove. Dubbed the `Spice Island' because of its impressive production of nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cloves, it has a rugged mountainous interior of rainforests and waterfalls and an indented coastline with protected bays and beaches. Its capital, St. George's, is one of the prettiest in the Caribbean.Although previosly known largely for being the turf on which the US military flexed its muscles in the name of democracy in the 1980s, most recent hurricane has caused massive rebuilding. Savvy Caribbean travelers know Grenada as a colorful, robust travel destination that's wonderfully rough around the edges.
Tourist infrastructure is still generally small-scale and locally owned, offering a good balance between comfort and price, making Grenada a great getaway for those travelers wanting to avoid the Caribbean resort experience. Since Grenada measures only 21 miles by 12 miles, the secret to a successful visit to Grenada is to mix up the beach (in)activity with getting out and about in the island's interior with a good pair of hiking boots. Don't forget it also includes the two populated Grenadine islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique, the most southerly of a long string of coral islands stretching north to neighboring St. Vincent.
